Encyclopedia of Language and Literacy Development

The Encyclopedia of Language and Literacy is an innovative web-based resource that provides easy and timely access to knowledge on language and literacy development. It is specifically designed for those whose decisions and activities affect children directly and on a daily basis.

ESL Assistant

The ESL Assistant is an interactive research-based software product designed to improve the English language skills of children in ESL programs in Canadian schools. The ESL Assistant will incorporate research findings about best practices in language and literacy development to reinforce the teaching of English vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar to aboriginal, immigrant and minority language children in Kindergarten through Grade Two.

Monsters and Rhymes

The Monsters and Rhymes game is a phonological awareness and early reading software product specifically designed for children who were identified with a moderate or severe delay in speech and development during the preschool period. Available: 2009

National Strategy for Early Literacy

The National Strategy for Early Literacy (NSEL) is a cooperative, Canada-wide initiative to improve the literacy skills of young Canadians. NSEL engages a broad coalition of organizations and individuals to understand and describe what can be done to improve literacy outcomes for young Canadians, and to put these actions into practice. The conclusion of the NSEL process will be a coherent, feasible, evidence-based national strategy to improve the literacy skills of young Canadians. The Strategy will include a clear statement of actions required for such improvement and discussion of the associated responsibilities that must be assumed by the various organizations whose work impacts literacy skills. Public consultations regarding the NSEL initiative are scheduled for cities across Canada in March 2009.

Literacy Resource Kit for Early Childhood Educators

Language and Literacy: From Birth... For Life is a multimedia resource kit that provides evidence-based tools to help child care practitioners support young children in their lifelong journey of literacy. The kit is comprised of a summary of current research on language and literacy development in young children, resource sheets, a poster and a CD-rom featuring workshops, interviews and video clips of effective practice techniques.

Literacy Resource Kit for Educators (K-6)

Foundations for Literacy: An Evidence-based Toolkit for the Effective Reading and Writing Teacher is intended for teachers, teacher trainers and for pre-service training and professional development programs offered through faculties of education and school boards. The kit presents evidence-based strategies on effective reading instruction so that teachers can better help children develop the literacy skills needed to succeed in school and life. The Roadmap to Language and Literacy combines the best of what is known about early language and literacy development to provide the 'big picture' of how children's abilities develop from infancy to age five. The Roadmap includes information for both parents and service providers.
