Research

Communication and literacy skills provide the foundation for effective social functioning and for academic, occupational/economic and life success. When children fail to develop good language and reading skills there are a range of profound and enduring consequences, including academic failure and dropping out of school, poor psycho-social development, and reduced self esteem and sense of well-being. All of these reduce the opportunities for lifelong success.

The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network is a community of researchers and partners seeking to improve the language and literacy skills of Canadian children. The broad objectives of this national network are to understand the factors that support the development of good language and literacy skills and to apply this knowledge to facilitate programs and practices to strengthen the language, communication, and literacy skills of Canada's children.

The Network's research program integrates contributions from the many sectors involved in children's literacy, including basic and applied scientists, educators, clinicians, parents and caregivers, and industrial and government partners. The Network covers the full spectrum of literacy and language research in its five research themes.
