Vianne Timmons Appointed to Executive of International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities

Dr. Vianne Timmons, Network Researcher and Vice-President Academic Development at UPEI, was appointed as an officer and board member of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID) at the 12th World Congress held in Montpelier, France, in June 2004. She will serve on the six-member executive until 2008. Dr. Timmons has worked in the disability field for over 20 years. Her primary research interest is inclusive education.

The International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (intellectual disabilities and related developmental disabilities) is an international and interdisciplinary scientific non-governmental organization with official relations to the World Health Organization. Founded in 1964, it is the only world-wide group dedicated to the scientific study of intellectual disability.

IASSID has sponsored 12 World Congresses and co-sponsored many regional and national meetings related to the Association's mission. It has co-sponsored scientific meetings in Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Austria, South Africa, Switzerland, and Great Britain. IASSID also seeks to provide active support for international exchanges.

The association's diverse activities include: holding a quadrennial international Congress, being involved with international activities within the United Nations and the World Health Organization, recognizing the outstanding contributions of key scientists through awards, underwriting the work of young scientists beginning to work in the field, promoting scientific publications, advocacy and policy development in research and services, and maintaining an international network of scientists and others concerned with the study of intellectual disabilities. More information about IASSID can be found at http://www.iassid.org.
