Canadian Language and Literacy Researchers Can Supervise Undergraduate Student Research Awards
It's come to the attention of The Canadian Language & Literacy Research Network that there is confusion in some University Administrations regarding whether or not Canadian Language & Literacy Research Network members can supervise students applying for the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council's (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA). To clarify any confusion that exists, it has been confirmed by the Networks of Centres of Excellence that indeed Network members meet the requirement of being actively supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
Three Canadian federal granting agencies support the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network - the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) - and Industry Canada combine their efforts to support and oversee NCE initiatives like The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network. Thus, NSERC contributes to the Network and achieves the USRA criterion that students must work under the supervision of a faculty member who holds an active NSERC research grant (either at the time of application submission or during the time period when a student holds the award)
One final note, Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network students or investigators are also still eligible to apply to any programs from other granting agencies in NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC as long as they meet the criteria for those programs
