Language and Literacy Workshop Precedes the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities - May 28, 2021
A pre-conference workshop organized by Language and Literacy Researchers of Canada (LLRC) is scheduled for May 28, 2021 at the University of Manitoba. The pre-conference session precedes the start of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) Conference 2004, held in conjunction with the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities, scheduled for May 29 - June 1, 2004.
Language and Literacy Researchers of Canada (LLRC) is a special interest group within the Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies (CACS), which is a constituent association of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE).
LLRC is comprised of individuals who are interested in language and literacy education and research, particularly, but not exclusively, within the Canadian context. We define "literacy" broadly, understanding that what it means to be literate is situational, and that individuals generally acquire numerous literacies as they navigate different linguistic spheres. In keeping with this notion, our members promote understanding of literacy acquisition in a range of developmental, socio-cultural, and media contexts.
The pre-conference, Identities, Differences and Discourses in Language and Literacy Teaching, Learning and Research: Where have we been? Where are we now? Where are we going?, co-sponsored by CACS and LLRC, is being organized by Luigi Iannacci, (a 2003 Network Postgraduate Scholarship Supplement Winner), Roz Stooke, Kathryn Hibbert, Julie Ann Kniskern and Rachel Heydon.
This pre-conference aims to critically analyze the present state of language and literacy research, teaching and learning in Canada, and to decide where hopes for the future reside. The conference will focus on excavating foundational understandings of four interrelated language and literacy traditions: whole language, critical literacies, feminist literacies and postcolonial literacies.
