About Us

The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network is a bold venture that brings leading scientists, clinicians, students and educators together with public and private partners. Our mandate is to generate, integrate and disseminate bias-free scientific research and knowledge that is focused on improving and sustaining children's language and literacy development in Canada.

The Network was formed when a group of leading Canadian researchers, with a long-standing scientific interest in language and literacy, responded to the Government of Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program to create a national network in early child development. In March 2001, The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network was formed when it received a 4-year, $14.2-million grant from the NCE program. Currently, The Network involves more than 100 Canadian researchers from coast to coast.

The Network is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation and is governed by a Board of Directors with experience in business, law, accounting, health care, media, academia and government. The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario hosts The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network's Administrative Centre. A full listing of Network research projects, programs and participants can be found on the Web site at http://www.cllrnet.ca.

A Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE)

The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network is proud to be a NCE. As such, we meet funding criteria based on research excellence, the development of world-class researchers, the creation of research partnerships and the application of research to foster economic and social development.

The NCE program is jointly administered by the three granting councils - the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) - in partnership with Industry Canada.
