Biography:

My major research activity, in collaboration with Dr.Gay Bisanz of the University of Alberta, for the next four years will be the study of the factors impinging on the development of disciplinary literacy. The study evolves
from the findings of my doctoral research with regard to the development of disciplinary literacy in a second language,at the high school level. I wish to find out if the results
of my doctoral study can be generalized to the development of emergent literacy in the first language,at the primary level. The importance of developing the ability to read, interpret and evaluate expository text cannot be overstated. Not only is it an important variable for the

growth of personal knowledge, but it is the essential prerequisite for the pursuit of professional activity and the exercise of responsible citizenship.

The language and culture of my heritage is passed on to me orally. it's a different way off learning than how I am taught at school. How do I keep my traditional culture alive while learning to read and being immersed in the majority culture?

Reading is the core of learning and staying in school . improving reading skills with young Aboriginal children can open up the doors to future prospects.
