Biography:

When children read aloud, they are judged not only by their intelligibility and fluency, but by how the sound of their voices makes the listeners feel. My laboratory research focuses on measuring and understanding how the quality of children's voices can influence the way teachers and peers think, feel, and react. As Director of Research Works! for child literacy, I work with a multidisciplinary team to develop research products useful for community literacy programs and on-line learning. Finally, in the Canadian Centre for Knowledge Mobilisation we are creating innovative and efficient tools, techniques, and products to bring information and knowledge to those who serve the educational welfare of Canadian children: parents, policy makers, and practitioners.

The language and culture of my heritage is passed on to me orally. it's a different way of learning than how I am taught at school. How do I keep my traditional culture alive while learning to read and being immersed in the majority culture?

Reading is the core of learning and staying in school. Improving my reading skills will open up the doors to future prospects.
