Biography:

I am a developmental psychologist at OISE/UT, in the Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology. My research interests are in early child development and education and I teach graduate and preservice courses on psychological foundations of early development and on Kindergarten education. My research projects to date have targeted parent involvement in preschool and kindergarten programs in order to foster family readiness for school and school readiness for families. I have recently moved to a specific focus on early literacy development. My current projects include: 1) SSHRC - School Readiness for Diverse Families, 2) Ontario Early Years Challenge Fund - Family Literacy Project and 3) City of Toronto/Atkinson Foundation - Toronto First Duty.

The language and culture of my heritage is passed on to me orally. it's a different way off learning than how I am taught at school. How do I keep my traditional culture alive while learning to read and being immersed in the majority culture?

Reading is the core of learning and staying in school . improving reading skills with young Aboriginal children can open up the doors to future prospects.
