The Network is currently designing an initiative to help improve language and literacy skills and development across the country. It has been established that literacy is a key driver of economic and social development and is a major contributor to social equity in the areas of health, education, and employment. The Network has determined that the foundation for good language and literacy skills is laid in childhood. Therefore, it is essential that a plan be devised to ensure the maintenance of quality language and literacy skills during the developmental years.
The Network believes that progress will require the communication of a coherent, evidence-based, national strategy for early literacy. A Planning Committee will be responsible for designing and monitoring the overall National Literacy Strategy (NLS) exercise on behalf of The Network. Planning Committee membership includes affiliates of the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network and a number of representatives from The Network. It is comprised of persons who have a strong relationship with The Network, including those responsible for key Network activities such as training and research management. The current members of the planning committee are as follows:
Peter Calamai, National Science Reporter, The Toronto Star
Scott Murray, Director, Education Outcomes, UNESCO Institute for Statistics
Wendy DesBrisay, Executive Director, Movement for Canadian Literacy
Anne Maxwell, Director of Projects, Programs and Services, Canadian Child Care Federation
Catherine Snow, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education
Rob Santos, Senior Policy Analyst, Policy Development, Research and Evaluation, Healthy Child Manitoba
Lesly Wade-Woolley, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Queen’s University
Don Jamieson, CEO and Scientific Director, Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network
The NLS will provide guidance to various sectors to foster good language/literacy development and assist in implementing the required changes. The NLS will also provide critically important guidance for the Network’s Strategic plan for 2008 through to 2015. The NLS project is now progressing with planned milestones between now and February 2007.
