The Acoustical Society of America is dedicating a special session at their 75th Anniversary Meeting (147th Meeting), New York, New York, May 24-28, 2004 to honour Dr. Charles Watson, a renowned senior scientist at Indiana University and valued member of The Network's External Scientific Advisory Board. The Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network Administrative team welcomes Tracy Fawdry, a London/Windsor Regional Coordinator for Frontier College, who is now sharing office space with us at The University of Western Ontario, Elborn College. Heather Sample, M.Sc., S-LP (C), a University of Alberta Student Network member, presented a poster entitled The "Sound" Team, an SLP/Educator Collaboration in Phonological Awareness at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Schools Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Heather also made a conference presentation called Sound Strategies: Developing Phonological Awareness in Primary Classrooms at the Early Literacy Symposium in Edmonton, Alta.

Ester Geva, a Network researcher at the University of Toronto, OISE, accepted an invitation to become a member on the National Literacy Panel struck by the United States Office of Education to examine issues concerning the development of literacy skills in minority children. She joins two other Canadians on this panel: Linda Siegel, Network researcher, University of British Columbia, and Fred Genesse, McGill University. The National Literacy Panel will conduct a comprehensive, evidence-based review of the research literature on the development of literacy among language minority children and youth. The panel will include several sub-committees that focus on specific topics of research such as assessment, learning disabilities, language development and literature, community and family, phonology, code instructions and fluency. Ester and Fred additionally participate on a subcommittee that is responsible for reviewing the available literature on English Language Learners and bilingual children (ages 3-18) with regard to the relationship between oracy and literacy. Marie France Menc, Network Board of Directors member, encourages Network members to attend The XYZ Community-Based Literacy Conference to be held at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S. June 17-19, 2003. Session presenters include John Daniel O'Leary, president of Frontier College; Vianne Timmons, Network researcher at the University of Prince Edward Island and UPEI's Vice President Academic Development and a professor of Education; and Christine Featherstone, Executive Director, ABC Canada.
