Biography: The current knowledge of reading disability in English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) populations is lacking in comparison to the knowledge of English monolingual populations. As a result, many ESL children with reading disability receive remediation relatively late in comparison to their English speaking peers. For this group of children, reading difficulties are compounded with the processes of acculturation and language acquisition, thereby making this group a high-risk group. My MA research focused on the orthographic properties of children’s native languages and the implications on the acquisition of English literacy skills. In my PhD program, I am extending my line of research to the study of the neural correlates of reading disabilty in monolingual and bilingual English speakers.Future Interests: Not available. |
The language and culture of my heritage is passed on to me orally. it's a different way of learning than how I am taught at school. How do I keep my traditional culture alive while learning to read and being immersed in the majority culture?
Reading is the core of learning and staying in school. Improving my reading skills will open up the doors to future prospects.
