Biography:

I hold a B.A. with Honors, Major in Modern languages (English and Spanish, University of Antioquia, 1996 and an M.ed. in Second Language Education, OISE/UT, 2002. I am a first year D.Ed. student in Second Language Education and Comparative International Development Education at OISE/UT.
My research interests are in language and literacy development among bilingual learners.
Since 2001 I have been working as a research assistant and project coordinator for Dr. Geva in her ESL At-Risk Research project. In August 2003 I joined Dr. Jared's team to coordinate the Toronto site of the research project; Understanding Reading Development in Second Lnaguage Learners. The participants at the Toronto site are from Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese language background.

The language and culture of my heritage is passed on to me orally. it's a different way off learning than how I am taught at school. How do I keep my traditional culture alive while learning to read and being immersed in the majority culture?

Reading is the core of learning and staying in school . improving reading skills with young Aboriginal children can open up the doors to future prospects.
